Minneapolis offers community pages through citywide wireless

Informational meetings is Thursday at 4 p.m. (correction from previous story)

As the city-wide wireless network gets up and running throughout Minneapolis, the city is hosting informational meetings so residents can learn more about the service and the opportunity to develop regional portal pages.

As of June 14, Cedar-Riverside, Seward and Downtown will comprise the first of six scheduled implementations to make Minneapolis a wireless community. A one-square–mile pilot wireless area in Cedar-Riverside – operational since November 2006 – will remain as the test site until the rest of the network is complete this November.

Communication throughout the city may benefit from the wireless network and portal pages by offering residents online access for a low price. Local company US Internet will provide affordable internet access, low-cost hardware and local content and training for $20 a month for residential customers and $30 for businesses.

Free access to community-created content and links to public websites and online resources will also be made available. Free limited-time service can be found in some public locations, such as parks and plazas in Minneapolis.
