Want a stimulus check? File a tax return.
The IRS is reminding everyone — especially retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who normally don’t file a tax return — that they must file for 2007 to receive their one-time federal stimulus payment of up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples). People who have received at least $3,000 from wages or certain benefits from Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Veterans Affairs may be eligible, according to a release from the IRS. For details or to find the 1040A-3 package that such filers can use to qualify for the stimulus payment, visit www.irs.gov or call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040.
A reminder, as well, that the American Association of Retired Persons Tax Aide Volunteer Program will provide free tax help, including preparing income tax forms and electronic filing, for senior and low-income residents, 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., Monday–Friday, through April 16. Ward 9 City Council Member Gary Schiff wrote in his February newsletter that eligible residents should bring W2 forms and other necessary papers, including photo identification and Social Security cards for themselves, spouses and all dependents, to the public service level of the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. Sixth St.; or to room 11 of Minneapolis City Hall, 350 S. Fifth St.
