Second Moon hosts reception for 5-year-old photographer — Saturday, Feb. 16

The exhibit “Summer in Winter,” a collection of photos by precocious shutterbug Summer Dakota, will grace the walls of Second Moon Coffee Shop, 2225 E. Franklin Ave., until the end of this month. The Atlanta-based artist will be present for a “meet-the-artist party” at the café on Saturday, Feb. 16, 6–8 p.m.

Dakota is the 5-year-old niece of Second Moon owner Cindy Kangas, who said Dakota is very excited about the party “because her mother promised her she could wear heels.” Wine and refreshments will be served, and Dakota’s work is available for purchase.

Dakota’s photos are excellent beyond her years. A somewhat tongue-in-cheek bio on the Second Moon wall describes the extent of her artwork, which goes beyond photography. “Dakota works in pencil, colored pencil, crayon and photography, and she has recently started writing music,” states the bio. “Her work in the public sphere reflects her daily life — often with a perspective below four feet — and covers transportation, architecture and nature.

“She has completed several coloring books ranging from the Barbie line to such humor-evoking classics as Scooby Doo and Looney Tunes … Her work has appeared on multiple steel appliance exhibits in Minneapolis, MN … Dakota is currently pursuing general studies at the Gwinnett County Elementary School outside Atlanta, GA.”
