Bridgeland celebrates Martin Luther King Day
Here’s a look at just a few of the ways Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is being celebrated in our neighborhoods this week:
2008 Martin Luther King Essay Contest

The Minneapolis City Council will honor nine student finalists in the 2008 Martin Luther King Essay Contest. Three of the students will have an opportunity to read an excerpt from their essays at the ceremony and also have their work submitted to the State Human Rights Commission as part of a statewide competition. Close to 500 Minneapolis students in grades 6–8 participated in this year’s contest.
“From Every Voice” Concert

The Office for Equity and Diversity and the School of Music at the University of Minnesota are teaming up to present the school’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. concert. The Steeles, an award-winning Minneapolis soul/ gospel group that has performed with the likes of Prince and Mahalia Jackson, are this year’s musical guest. Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation

The latest installation of the annual convocation is titled “Visions of a Just Society: Dr. King’s Legacy” and features guest speaker Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, professor of African-American Studies at the University of Massachusetts.
