December theatre calendar

Bridgeland is rich with theatre, but with a community calendar that features free or low-cost events, theatrical productions usually get short shrift, due to the average $10–$20 ticket cost. To fill the gap, we have put together the following list of current productions in the coverage area or by area companies. We’ll try to update it from month to month, as space allows. (Did we miss any? Send an email to editor@readthebridge.info.)

This month, we welcome the return of the People’s Center Theater, 425 20th Ave. S. The community theatre space reopens, after renovations to its neighboring medical center, on Dec. 6, with a specially expanded version of Heidi Arneson’s play Cold Enough to Freeze Your Shadow to the Ground. Set in 1864, the play tells the tale of Scandinavian immigrants weathering a Minnesota blizzard with traditional tales, music and holiday customs.

Founded in 1920, the People’s Center Theater space has long served an ever-evolving Cedar-Riverside immigrant community born originally out of similar 19th-century Scandinavians.
Cold Enough runs Dec. 6–9 and 13–16 (see website for times and ticket prices). In 2008, Arneson will stay on as resident performance artist, along with Magicword Theater as resident theatre group.
