University of Minnesota professor emeritus wins Nobel Prize for economics

Leonid Hurwicz, professor emeritus at the U of M, won the Nobel Prize in economics last month. At 90 years old, Hurwicz is the oldest Nobel winner in history. The Moscow-born researcher shared the award with Eric Maskin and Roger Myerson, with whom he “developed a theory that helps explain situations in which markets work and others in which they don’t,” stated a news release from the university.

According to the release, Hurwicz received his master of laws degree from Warsaw University, Poland, in 1938. He has taught in the areas of theory, welfare economics, public economics, mechanisms and institutions, and mathematical economics. He continues to do research, including his current comparison and analysis of systems and techniques of economic organization, welfare economics, game-theoretical implementation of social choice goals, and modeling economic institutions.

Stadium-area roads, sidewalks paved and open as construction continues

All roads have been paved and sidewalks are open around the construction site for the Gopher’s TCF Bank Stadium, according to a university announcement. Street light installation is nearing completion, and final traffic signals are being installed. Landscaping is nearing completion.

Construction of the stadium is underway. Earth is being moved and pilings drilled for the stadium. There will be 2,200 pilings, each drilled into bedrock, filled with concrete, and then capped in concrete. Concrete beams will be placed between pilings and a concrete slab poured on top.

Neighborhood impact report receives award

“Moving Forward Together: U of M Minneapolis Area Neighborhood Impact Report” was selected this fall by the Minnesota Chapter of the American Planning Association to receive a merit award as an Outstanding Planning Project.

Preparation of a report on the impacts of the university and the relationship among the neighborhoods, the university, and the city was directed in a financing bill approved by the Legislature in 2006 in support of an on-campus Gopher’s football stadium. The Legislature this year appropriated $750,000 to support creation of the report’s proposed Neighborhood Alliance and University Partnership District, and to fund a demonstration project.

The report is available online at www1.umn.edu/twincities/index.php. Once there, search: “Moving Forward Together.”

Stadium good neighbor fund committee announced

Five members and two alternates have agreed to serve on the Fund Management Committee of the Stadium Area Advisory Group, University Community Relations Director Jan Morlock announced.

The committee members are: Stephen Banks, Prospect Park; Joan Menken, Southeast Como; Cathy Vennewitz, West Bank Business Association; Chris Woodall, St. Anthony Park; and university students Skyler Kehren and Casey Martin. Alternates are Ron Lischeid, University District Improvement Association, and Denise Currie, Southeast Business Association.

The committee plans to issue its first request for proposals in January. The university allocated $1.5 million from the Gopher TCF Bank football stadium budget to endow a fund. About $75,000 is expected to be available annually to address neighborhood concerns and improvements related to construction and operation of the stadium.
