The Angler
Welcome to the blustery days of November in Bridgeland! The gardens are now put to bed and the mornings and evenings are darker, so neighbors won’t be visiting in front yards as much, but we’ll still be meeting up in coffee shops and reading about each other here in the paper. Here’s the news for November:
-
Congratulations to Marcy-Holmes resident Arvonne Fraser, whose memoir, She’s No Lady: Politics, Family and International Feminism has just been published by Nodin Press. According to Fraser, the book “deals with my Minnesota farm childhood; marrying Don, settling on Southeast Seventh Street and having six children; being unhappy in Washington after Don was elected to Congress until I discovered the women’s movement; and my international work.” There will be two great opportunities to hear Fraser read from her book and get signed copies: on Thursday, Nov. 1, she will read at 7 p.m. at the Minneapolis Central Library; and on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 5:00 p.m., she will receive the University of Minnesota’s Outstanding Achievement Award and talk about the book in the atrium of the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, where she was a senior fellow.

This year isn’t a big election year for Minneapolis and statewide offices, but two Bridgeland residents are getting ready to run in 2008. Seward resident and South High dad Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer has announced that he is a candidate to be the Democratic nominee to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Norm Coleman; for more information, go to www.jackforsenate. org. And Seward Montessori mom and resident Carla Bates has announced that she will run for a seat on the Minneapolis School Board next year; for more information, go to www.carlabates.org.

School Board Member Tom Madden may be used to tough crowds at the monthly School Board meetings, but some thought he showed his true courage by deciding to take a ride with the kids on the Marcy Open school bus that goes to Prospect Park after school on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Some parents had expressed concern about horseplay on that route, so Madden decided to check it out for himself. His assessment? “It’s a great group of kids,” he said. “I ended up talking to almost every single one of them, and they were really nice, respectful kids.” He said the ride reinforced his belief in “the importance of adults engaging with kids” and the fact that kids will live up to the expectations that adults have for them.

Two local students, Aru Shiney Ajay, a fifth-grader at Pratt, and Kai Russell from Seward, recently performed in the Frank Theatre’s production of “The Pillowman,” which ran from Sept. 20 to Oct. 14 on the Guthrie Theater’s Dowling Studio stage. Kai’s mother, Maria Asp, also starred; she is well-known to many area students as the captain of the Children’s Theater’s Neighborhood Bridges program.

In these autumn days of rainclouds and diminishing daylight, we could use a little blue sky. Prospect Park United Methodist Church is selling the Blue Sky Guide, made up of community coupons, retail organizations and activities around the metro area, all in support of sustainability and “green” practices. The guides are $20 and come with two free bus passes and a link to a website to get a free reusable grocery bag. If you are interested in a Blue Skies Guide, email Lucy at l.suits@att.net.

Finally, congratulations to Southeast Seniors, Living at Home/Block Nurse Program, for receiving the Caring Neighbors Founder’s Award in honor of the organization’s 20 years of dedicated service. Southeast Seniors was incorporated in 1987 and began serving clients in 1988. The award was presented by former St. Paul Mayor George Latimer at the Elderberry Institute’s 20th anniversary celebration on Sept. 20.
