Safety alert issued after armed robbery at University Village
The University of Minnesota Police Department has issued a public safety alert for the Twin Cities Campus after two University students were robbed at gunpoint the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 10.
At approximately 11:45 pm, the two students were robbed outside the University Village apartment complex, located at 2601 University Ave. SE. The victims’ wallets, cash and cell phones were taken. Neither victim was hurt during the robbery, but when the suspects were fleeing afterward, one of them fired a gun at the victims. The suspects were last seen getting into light-colored sedan, possibly silver or gold.
The suspects were described as both being Somali or East African males. One had a thin build and was wearing a dark sweatshirt, dark jeans and a Minnesota Twins baseball cap. The other had a medium build, a short beard, and was wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark jeans and a blue baseball cap.

The University Police also issued a crime alert on Sept. 27 in response to a robbery and assault that occurred on Sept. 25 near the Carlson School of Management on the West Bank campus. In that incident, a man not associated with the University was walking on 19th Ave. S. from the Seven Corners area at approximately 10:55 pm when he was approached by a lone male who asked him for the time. He continued walking and when he passed the Carlson School he was approached by four additional men, who demanded his money and implied that they had a gun. When he victim said he didn’t have any money, the suspects punched and kicked him and knocked him to the ground, taking his wallet, cell phone and keys. The suspects then ran away, heading north.
The five suspects were all described as being between 20 and 24 years old. One was white wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, three were black wearing all black clothing, and one was American Indian with a stocky build. Anyone with information about this crime are asked to call 612-624-COPS (2677).
