Resource Center of the Americas closes its doors
After 25 years of existence, the Resource Center of the Americas closed its doors at 3019 Minnehaha Ave. S., citing “continuing and insurmountable financial challenges,” according to a message posted on its website. After several years of program cutbacks, staff layoffs and other financial difficulties, the center suspended all operations on Aug. 16, including the café, bookstore, and all upcoming classes and programs. Anyone who has registered for fall classes will receive a refund. For more information, visit www.americas.org.
The web message stated that the center’s board of directors will work with its members, partners and other affiliated organizations to explore ways to continue its mission and key programs.
The center began in 1982 as a volunteer-established program advocating for human rights — especially immigrants’ rights — and dealing with issues of globalization and development in the Americas.
The award-winning achievements for programs and services include the Centro de Derechos Laborales (Workers’ Rights Center), Penny Lernoux Library and the Bookstores of the Americas.
