South Minneapolis Contamination Site meeting tonight, 7 p.m., at Midtown YWCA

Contamination, ongoing project impact Seward, North Longfellow

Tonight, Tuesday, July 24, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 will hold an open-house-style neighborhood meeting at the Midtown YWCA, 2121 E. Lake St., from 7–8:30 p.m., in order to update residents about the South Minneapolis Soil Contamination Superfund site in Minneapolis. Representatives from EPA, and state and local agencies, will be on hand to answer questions about the project.

The site, near South 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue impacts several neighborhoods, including Seward and North Longfellow. A pesticide containing arsenic was produced there, according to a release from the EPA, and is believed to have been wind-blown into nearby neighborhoods.

For more information about the site and its affect on nearby neighborhoods, see Scott Russell’s November 2006 story, or visit the EPA’s website.
