Seward Neighborhood Group seeks talent for King's Fair
In the latter part of September during odd numbered years, a crowd of people gather in Matthews Park; musicians mount a stage and tune their instruments; artists and artisans display their wares for sale and story tellers step up to microphones. Children play games and decorate bikes and wagons for a parade through the park. Bingo calls and smells of barbecue waft on the air. People look really happy and they are, because this is King’s Fair.
King’s Fair is a major, biennial community celebration held at Matthews Park in the fall, organized by the Seward Neighborhood Group and the staff at Matthews Park. The theme for this year’s event is “Building a Sustainable Seward” and the Fair will include educational activities and displays to illustrate the theme. Not to be forgotten though, are the festivities such as musical performances, dancing, arts and craft sales, games and prizes. The event will take place on September 22, 2007 from noon to 5 PM., and because the Fair comes around only every other year, it’s an event not to be missed.
You can be part of this traditional community-building event and in fact, the Fair’s organizers count on your efforts to make it a success. The organizers need musicians, jugglers, balloon artists, face painters, magicians, clowns, storytellers and other entertainers capable of helping fairgoers have fun. To volunteer, please call Josie at extension 114 (or email to: josie@sng.org) or Bernie at 612 338 6205, ext. 102 (email: bernie@sng.org).
The second stage will be an “open stage” where folks from the community can step up to the microphone and deliver; a cowboy poem, a song or two, a humorous yarn or comedy sketch, walk a yo-yo or play a musical instrument. This is the day when Sewardites can step forward and showcase their own particular talent. Why keep your light under a basket? Performers are asked to call and reserve a time slot to ensure that the second stage is nicely busy throughout the day. There won’t be prizes because everyone will be a winner. Contact the people above to reserve your time.
The Fair’s organizer, the Seward Neighborhood Group invites individuals and businesses to sponsor in full or in part, one of the acts on the main stage. Major sponsors will be listed on a sign on the stage and announced throughout the day. This year’s main stage entertainment includes Kellie Nitz and Jive Deluxe, Cadillac Andrew Kolstad, Rass Kwame and Ananse, the Whistle Pigs and Machinery Hill -a great lineup guaranteed to keep toes tapping all afternoon.
