“Political Party” at Resource Center of the Americas to Explore Immigration Issue
The Resource Center of the Americas, 3019 Minnehaha Ave., will host an all-ages, all-day event Sat., July 14, dedicated to the issue of immigration.
Two workshops are planned for the “Political Party.” The first session, beginning at 10 a.m. is designed as a historical seminar about how trade unions have dealt with immigrants, both past and present. The second workshop, which commences at 11:30 a.m., is an immigration reform update that will focus on the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and national legislation pertaining to the issue of immigration, according to the Center’s Executive Director, Kathleen McKown.
An exhibit by local photographer, Eric Gruen, in the Center’s basement gallery, will feature photographs Gruen took in Nicaragua. Gruen will be present to address questions and discuss the exhibit. Paintings from the Xuchialt Art School in Nicaragua will also be on display.
Children’s activities will include a bilingual story hour at 10:30 a.m and an appearance by entertainer “Tom the Marble Guy” at 1:30 p.m.
Also at 1:30 p.m., the self-proclaimed “Latin word slingers,” known as Palabristas, will give a spoken word performance.
Later in the afternoon, Kalpulli Yaobenoxtli will perform along with an Andean musical group.
