Playwrights' Center's 25th annual new plays festival starts Friday, July 13
This July marks the 25th year that The Playwrights’ Center, 2301 Franklin Ave. E, will host its festival of new plays. For five days, the Center’s Waring Jones Theater will showcase five original plays, which were selected from several hundred entries to be part of this year’s PlayLabs lineup. Each production will be put on twice during the festival.
PlayLabs are a unique opportunity for members of the public to see productions by The Playwrights’ Center, as the Center, which provides support services to playwrights, is not typically involved in producing productions outside of this annual event.
The festival kicks off with a free opening reception, Fri., July 13 at 7 p.m., where the featured playwrights will preview their work through excerpted readings.
A panel discussion, titled Theater and Politics, will be moderated by The Playwrights’ Center’s Producing Artistic Director, Polly K. Carl on the last day of the event. Theater in Politics, Sun. July 22, 12:30-1:30 p.m., will explore trends in American political theater and theater’s political responsibility.
Tickets are $10 for each production. A “Theater Industry Weekend Pass” to see all five plays in two days is $40.
