Mayor envisions a greener Washington ‘Boulevard’
Mayor R.T. Rybak and members of the Washington Boulevard Great City Design Team showcased in June their plan to transform Washington Avenue — from I-35W to West Broadway — into “Washington Boulevard.”
The design team hopes to complement existing and ongoing development along the avenue with more pedestrian-friendly walkways, public street art, additional on-street parking, signage and plantings. Preliminary sketches show Washington Boulevard replete with lush trees and shrubbery lining the space between sidewalks and streets.
“So many things are happening along Washington Avenue that are already helping to fulfill this vision of Washington as a grand boulevard,” said David Graham, chair of the design team, in a press release.
For now, the project remains a vision, although Rybak has announced the formation of a Washington Boulevard Implementation Committee to put it into action.
